Highmoor 18th October

Date: 18th Oct 2024 @ 12:56pm

Welcome to our week in Highmoor.

We have been learning a new method of addition and subtraction in maths - the column method. We started by adding two digit numbers and then moved on to subtraction. We have been using place value grids and place value counters to help. We all agreed that we like this method and then tried some trickier addition calculations involving exchanging when we have 10 or more in the ones or tens. This is more difficult but we all worked hard and are having lots of success using the method.

In rugby we continue to practise our ball handling skills. Running with the ball, passing, catching and (of course) scoring a try. We focused on control this week before going into a game. We are continuing to enjoy our sessions at Kennylands gym and seeing great improvement of our gymnastic skills.

In literacy we have been rewriting the beginning of a chapter from The Firework Maker's Daughter. We have included lots of description and thought about how to make our writing interesting. We have been reading each others work and giving feedback on what we think worked well and how we can improve. We have also been doing reading comprehensions about rivers and forces, and some slow writes with Mrs Griffiths where we really thought about the value that each word brings to our writing. Teddy did a great book review of The Karate Kid this week - well done Teddy!

In RE we are continuing to think about if it is important for Christians to take Communion. This week we looked at Baptism and how that also made Christians feel part of the Christian community.

In science we investigated how different magnets have different magnetic fields depending on their strength and the area of their poles. Lily brought in her magnetic building activity from home for us all to explore. We enjoyed some magnetic creativity and experimented with magnet strength, repelling and attracting.

We investigated different rivers around the world on our iPads in Geography and found out about the different ways that humans use them.

Homework is Doodle maths, reading, times tables and spellings.

Have a great weekend everyone.
