Highmoor 12th January
Date: 12th Jan 2024 @ 12:55pm
Happy new year everyone! Welcome to the first week of the Spring term in Highmoor.
We started our new history topic learning about the ancient Greeks and their lasting impact on the world today. We got to handle various replica objects from oil lamps, an inscribed discus, decorated vases and plates, coins, halteres weights and many more. We thought about what these objects tell us about life in Ancient Greece. We learnt about the location and landscape of Greece and how that affected the way in which the civilisation developed.
In literacy we will be reading lots of Greek myths to tie in with our topic and started with Hades and Persephone. We summarised the myth which was trickier than we thought as we tried to decide what was the key information to include.
In maths we have moved on to length and perimeter. Year 3s were measuring and solving problems using cm, m and mm. Year 4s were doing similar and included km in their work.
PE this term continues to be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We are learning ball skills on the common building up to playing games of football and we are also learning the Charleston dance!
In art we have been talking about the value of annotating our work as we progress through a topic. We evaluated what we produced thinking about what we liked and how we might improve next time. We looked at a professional artist’s sketchbook to see how they used lots of different ideas and media to produce a final piece of work. We created our own worlds of spoons and forks!
Our science topic this term is plants and we started off by studying the importance, function and types of roots. We planted some seeds to create root farms to observe over time and then built models to see how effective different roots are at absorbing nutrients.
Homework is Doodle maths, daily reading, spellings and times tables.
Have a great weekend all.
