Greys Class 15 September 2023

Date: 14th Sep 2023 @ 6:12pm

This has been a busy week for the children and their new teacher!

The Year 1 children have been trying very hard to adjust to the routines in our room and settling in really well.

In phonics we are well on our way in the reviewing of the phonics covered in Reception. The children are delighted when they are able to read their corresponding readers with increasing fluency.

The year 2's have been working on reading for fluency and prosody and have shown pleasing progress. Thank you for supporting us at home in this regard.

In Maths the Year 1's have been learning about counting forwards and counting backwards from any number within the ten as well as matching the numeral with its written name. This they found challenging and will be revised.

The Year 2's have been working on the partition of numbers to 100; separating eg. 56 into 5 tens and 6 ones and then writing the numeral in words.

In English we were reminded to write in full sentences starting with a capital letter and ending with a full stop.

We have also been learning about letters; their purpose and structure. We talked about address and how specific they are.

We had a mischevious visitor in Greys classroom this week! As some of you may know, the culprit wrecked the reading corner and this upset the children and teachers alike!

After much discussion and outrage, we decided to write letters to the culprit, the Naughty Bus to explain the rules of the Greys classroom. We talked about the use of the word 'but' and how we could use it to explain that he may visit Greys but.........  The children will then address their own envelope and post their letter.

In Science we are continuing to investigate the properties of materials and their suitability.

In History the children took a deeper dive into the story of the Wright Brothers. In groups they ordered the story and then we tested a few paper aeroplane designs.

I have suggested they come up with a great  paper plane design with your help (and that of Mr Google!)  and thought it would be fun at half term to test their designs out on the common.

In Art we explored the concept of 'taking your line for a walk!' We had fun doing continuous line drawings, which some found challenging and others, hilarious. The main objective was to remind the children to ' draw what you see. Not what you THINK you see.'

All in all, a full, happy week.

Have an great weekend.
