Date: 3rd Apr 2025 @ 6:26pm

It's been a really busy and enriching term for all of us in Springwood Class. Here's a glimpse into all we've achieved together:

English:

This half term, we read "Windrush Child" by Benjamin Zephaniah, which gave us valuable insights into the challenges faced by the Windrush generation. Our class discussions about compassion, understanding, and the impact of racism were thoughtful and mature. This reading journey complemented our History topic "Black and British," providing a fascinating exploration of the significant contributions and experiences of Black people throughout British history. These interconnected subjects helped us better appreciate our diverse national heritage.

World Book Day Celebrations

The class embraced World Book Day in March with wonderful enthusiasm! We saw an amazing array of costumes, including Harry Potter characters, Cat in the Hat, Boy in a Dress, and some delightfully wicked witches, among many other creative interpretations. A special highlight was when our Year 6 students had the opportunity to read stories to their buddies, while the Year 5s shared books with children in Greys class – a lovely way to celebrate the joy of reading across the school.

Computing:

We enjoyed exploring the creative side of coding this term, using Scratch to design and compose our own musical scores. The children learned how to program different instruments, create rhythms, and build interactive musical elements. By combining programming concepts with musical creativity, we discovered how technology can be used as a tool for artistic expression.

PE:

PE remains a class favourite! This term we developed our orienteering and map-reading skills, learning to navigate using coordinates and landmarks. We also practiced fielding and striking skills in cricket, with mini-games played out on the common. These activities helped build both physical abilities and teamwork skills.

Art and DT: Playground Design Project

Our Art lessons this term focused on planning and designing playgrounds suitable for children our age and younger. We then brought these designs to life during our DT day, constructing model playgrounds using various materials, including wood, cardboard, and repurposed boxes. The creativity and thoughtfulness that went into these projects was truly impressive, with students considering accessibility, safety, and fun in their designs.

Science:

We continued our exploration of the circulatory system, investigating how exercise and different foods affect our hearts and bodies. We also learned about how nutrients and water are transported throughout our bodies, gaining a deeper understanding of this remarkable system that keeps us alive and healthy.

Maths:

We've covered a wide range of mathematical topics this term, including percentages, ratio and proportion, geometry, and algebra. These foundational skills will serve us well as we continue to develop our mathematical thinking.

Special Visitors

We welcomed Chris Woodcock from Oxfordshire County Council, who spoke to us about the importance of fire safety as well as water safety as we move into the warmer months.

Our Easter service was led by Reverend Sarah, who reminded us of the significance of Easter week and God's love for us. Our worship councillors beautifully read the story of Jesus's resurrection, and we all joined together in singing many uplifting songs. The service concluded with a delightful recorder recital.

We wish you all a blessed Easter holiday and look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for new adventures next term!
