Another exciting week of learning in Springwood Class, with a particularly memorable science lesson that brought our circulatory system topic to life!

Science

This week we were incredibly fortunate to welcome Mrs Hannah Rancombe, a Biology teacher from Reading Blue Coat School, who gave us an unforgettable hands-on lesson about the heart and circulatory system. Working in small groups of 2-3, we had the unique opportunity to participate in a real heart dissection!

After Mrs Rancombe's expert demonstration, each group was provided with surgical scissors to carefully examine and dissect a sheep's heart. While some of us found the smell a bit challenging, our curiosity and excitement overcame initial hesitation. The experience became even more fascinating when Mrs Rancombe showed us a complete set of sheep organs, including the trachea, lungs, heart, and liver. Those who felt brave enough got to touch these organs, giving us an amazing real-life connection to our circulatory system studies.

Maths

We took a practical approach to learning about fractions of amounts this week. Instead of just working with numbers on paper, we used real fruit to make our calculations more meaningful. Working in groups, we had to solve various fraction problems using our fruit collection. For example, if we had 24 grapes in total, we had to work out what ⅓ would be, then ¾, and other fractions. This hands-on method really helped us understand how to divide quantities into equal parts and calculate fractions of different amounts. We then got to eat the fruit.

PE

We made use of the netball court at the other school property this week. Despite the grim weather, we had a fantastic PE session with Amanda putting us through our paces. We practised passing drills, footwork, and shooting techniques, getting increasingly muddy but having loads of fun. The rain didn't dampen our spirits at all as we worked on improving our netball skills and teamwork.
