This week we had the pleasure of welcoming Miss Emelia Allen to our class. She is a student teacher from Winchester University who will be joining our learning journey.

Art

Our fashion design project took an exciting turn this week as we began creating the foundations for our clothing displays. Working with thick cardboard, we carefully cut out human body shapes to serve as models for our designs - though we quickly discovered this was quite a challenging task! We also engineered supports so our models can stand independently.

The next phase will be especially exciting as we'll be crafting the actual clothes we've designed. Our project theme explores modern designs inspired by different cultures, and we can't wait to see how all our creative ideas come to life on our cardboard models.

English

We're currently engrossed in Malorie Blackman's thought-provoking novel, 'Pig Heart Boy'. The story follows Cam, a young boy facing a critical decision when he needs a heart transplant. With no human heart available, his surgeon proposes using a heart from a pig named Trudy.

This week, we really got to know the characters through an engaging hot-seat activity. Taking on the roles of different characters from the book, we faced challenging questions from our classmates, who acted as members of the community. This exercise helped us understand the complex feelings and viewpoints of each character, making us think deeply about the difficult decisions they face. We also had a few good laughs!

We are still enjoying our trips to the Sonning Common Library every Thursday. So may books, so little time!

Computing

We advanced our micro:bit skills by creating polling programs. After connecting our micro:bits to the Chromebooks, we used Microsoft MakeCode to build the program. The children could respond to questions using different button combinations: A for agree, B for disagree, and both buttons for unsure. The micro:bit displayed the poll results when it was shaken (not stirred!). This hands-on project helped us understand variables, input events, and basic mathematical operations in coding.

Reminders:

  • We have a special visitor to our Science lesson on Wednesday!
