Friday, 20th September by Esther and Ruby

Date: 21st Sep 2024 @ 1:10pm

On Tuesday, 3rd September, we returned to school after 5 ½ weeks of summer holiday. It was exciting to be back at school again.

During the first week, we settled in and started some new sections of work in Maths and English. We also learned about the different leadership roles we could have in Springwood Class. Different people chose to be Art Monitors, I.T Monitors, Librarians and Eco-Warriors. We held mini-elections for other roles. Our school councillors  are Ivy and Immie. Our worship councillors are Jessica and Elle . Beech Team Captain is Summer, Esther is Maple's, Islay is Oak's and Ruby is Willow's.

In the second week, we went to St David's in Wales on our 5-day residential. We had a great time, and the food was amazing. We went coasteering, body surfing and giant paddle boarding. While the year 6s went to visit Pembroke Castle and a stone circle, the year 5s went on a coastal walk and a visit to the Bug Farm. Every evening we went to the beach. It was a week to remember.

This last week was "back to normal".

Maths:

In Maths we are revising place value and whole numbers. We have started doing three "Arithmetic Workouts" a week and on Wednesday we have a specific Maths problem to solve in groups. This week's was very tricky!

English:

We have started reading the novel "Holes", by Louis Sachar. Before we started reading the book, we looked at pictures taken in a desert and tried to imagine what it would be like to live there. We then wrote a descriptive paragraph about one of the pictures.

Each year group will be going to the Sonning Common Library on alternate Thursdays to borrow books. The year 5s went this week, and the year 6s will go next week. We enjoyed a discussion about books we are reading at the moment.

Science

We are studying our wonderful solar system. We watched a few video clips which absolutely amazed us, and discussed some fascinating facts about the planets and the sun. Linked to that is our section on binary coding which we started learning about in Computing.
