Welcome to 2025, and what a busy start it has been!

Traditionally on our Springwood blog, we choose 3 topics we have really enjoyed learning about in the week. This week we chose English, Science and Art.

English

We were introduced to an incredible poem called "The Dreadful Menace." It was actually written for a BBC trailer for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The poem itself is very dramatic, and when paired with the video footage, it creates an incredibly powerful impact. In class, we watched and listened to it several times to really take in both the vivid words and stunning visuals.

After exploring the rich vocabulary and examining the poem's rhyme scheme, we took on two creative writing challenges. First, we drafted descriptive paragraphs about icy mountain scenes, trying to capture the same sense of drama and atmosphere as the original poem. Then came the challenging part - we attempted to write our own simile poems about winter. This proved to be much more tricky than we initially thought!

Science

This week we started learning about the human circulatory system. It was just an introductory lesson, but we were already fascinated by learning about our hearts! We did a practical activity where we got into groups, and one person from each group lay down on a large piece of paper while the rest of us traced around them. We then used wool to mark where the main blood vessels are in our bodies - blue wool to show the veins and red wool to show the arteries. We worked together to place these correctly on our life-size body outlines. The completed diagrams helped us visualize how blood flows through our bodies. This was just the beginning of our learning about this fascinating organ, and we're looking forward to discovering more about how our circulatory system works in our upcoming lessons.

Art

we began an exciting new topic in Art - fashion design! To get started, we explored the work of different fashion designers, studying what inspires them and examining their unique choices of colours and patterns. We were particularly drawn to Alice Fox's collection, carefully noting the patterns and colour combinations that caught our eye.

During our research, we learned how designers take inspiration from various sources to create their unique styles. We spent time analyzing different designs and discussing what made them special. This initial exploration will help us with our own fashion designs, as in the next lesson we'll be experimenting with creating our own colour schemes and pattern combinations. We're looking forward to developing our ideas and seeing where our creativity takes us!

Homework

A reminder about daily homework:

  • Complete the assigned CGP work
  • Practise on Doodle Maths
  • Learn your spelling words

Make sure you keep up with all these tasks each day. They help reinforce what we learn at school!
